Anyone who was at Legends of Divng 2010 remembers that I posed the question of how one would consume beer underwater. Well, today at Ginnie I did just that. The specific gravity of beer is about that of water, so it just stayed in the can after I opened it and equalized the pressure. I chugged it at 50 feet, and then finished the dive. It kind of feels like being narced, except you are only at 50 feet. Interestingly, as I am not aware of the internal pressure of an unopened beer, the volume appeared unchanged at 50 feet so the internal pressure in the can must be higher than the ambient water pressure around it. I moved the open beer into various positions, and no beer came out until I drank it. Needless to say there were some very surprised open water divers at Ginnie today. One lady asked if she could have my car because she thought I would die somehow toting a beer and 50 year old dive gear down to the water.
The best part was that is was some redneck Floridian who tossed me a Busch Light in order to facilitate my endeavor. Stand back....I'm going to try SCIENCE!
