Can you paint DH cans?

Sun May 06, 2018 12:12 pm

I am rebuilding a DH reg and was wondering if I can paint the cans?
Would there be any health issues with painting them?
Any types of paints I should use or stay away from if I can paint them?

I plan to only paint the outside of it

I have one that I painted the exterior and then clear coated. It looks great but remember that any painted surface is MUCH easier to scratch than a chromed surface.

To avoid issues, you could refrain from painting the interior, and just be more meticulous with your after-care regimen. I once did an FX non-mag which I painted black - but later on had it powder coated for greater protection. I still use a rattle-can every now and then to touch up some dings on the finish.

Not trying to be facetious or trolling here, but if you ever eat while working on your car, make your sandwich on a varnished counter top, drink from the garden hose, chew on your pen cap, breath the paint fumes while painting the cans,,,,,,, there probably isn't any need to worry about breathing over a fully cured painted surface.

I know, this topic is old, but I did have a paint job on the interiors of my La Spirotechnique Royal Mistral since noone wanted to renew the chrome plating. Its done with 2K-silber paint so there are no fumes evaporating. You do have to check for remains of tape tough. It might be difficult to spot tough. Missed two pieces myself which flooded the can over 15 minutes. I did have a stage tank as backup tough.

Since I've removed the remains, it works very well.
