Possible future Sand Dog location

Mon Apr 19, 2010 11:45 am

I put together some information on diving opertunities in the Florida panhandle from Panama City to Pensacola with Destin being in the middle.

Here is what is available on the Florida northern Gulf coast.
Almost all are within a 50 mile driving radius of Destin,Fl not counting the boat ride to the Empira Mica and Oriskany.

Feel free to add other potential locations.

Those are all great for a future vintage event or Sand Dog down the road but if we dive these areas then June is a better time, not March or early April because in early Spring I can guarantee, COLD, rough, and low viz.

Of course there is the boat issue, I have to say, if I can say this, the dive ops up there (down there from here, lol) are complete p----, ok, wussies. Of course, there are reasons some are that way, the northern Gulf can be a widow maker or at least provide justification for gray hair.

The two boats that operate out of Destin are not so good. They are nice people, don't get me wrong but one is a converted oil service boat with a four foot drop to the water and the other is old when I dove on it in high school and neither ever go very far out past the bridge rubble.

Some of those locations are pretty hardcore dives, long boats rides, always a current, open ocean, deep (Empire, Mighty O, Timberholes, Mohawk Chief etc) and I love them all.

We canceled our rental home for three weeks in Destin. I have no future plans to return to the area. I think there will be oily sand underwater, on the beach and everywhere in between from Houma to Panama City and parts beyond so I think a SD event anywhere in the proposed areas in the next decade is out. I work in, on and around jet aircraft, if I want to get covered in oil, grease and Jet A I can just go to work and save my vacation and get paid a lot of money for the fun.

We are headed to the Caymans instead. M.C. and I used to do a lot of air travel diving, I think we are back to that. The Whaler has a really sad smirk. Dunno, very sad. .
