Hi

New to wing / back plate diving but thinking about a Kraken / VDH back plate / wing combination. But I am unceartain about wing size. I dive often in cold water, drysuit and Steel bottles only. Normally i need about 10-12 kg of lead for those conditions.

What wing size would you recommend. Another question, are the wings not quite “alike” from different producers ?? Since I am on the other side of the Globe I am thinking about just getting a wing locally, what would be the advantage of getting the VDH wing, is it specifically tailored to the kraken??

With using steel tanks and my dry suit, I use a 30-35# wing. The thing I most importantly look for in the wing is an offset elbow.

look where the inflator hose comes off the wing. Some make it in the top center (can conflict), while others make them offset (no can conflict).

For me, most of the time when I am diving my dry suit with a double hose reg and the VDH plate, I do not use a wing. I find my trim is much better that way. I dive that way at places like Lake Wazee and Fortune Pond and also wreck diving on Lake Michigan. Works great!

For work I dive shallow that way just using the suit, BUT on deeper dives I would be a bit hesitant not to have alternative buoyancy how do you deal with that??

If you get in a jam you can always dump some weight. I didn't mention it in the post, but I normally use a pony with a single hose reg to supply air to my dry suit. This also gives me a bail out option if the you know what hits the fan.
