Tank Tumbler

Sat Oct 16, 2010 6:23 am

I am in the process of designing a new inexpensive single tank tumbler. I have taken about a year and reviewed, read, researched, collected ideas and photos. I am making this out of materials readily accessable from Ace hardware,& Tractor supply. The drive motor on the unit will be a 1/2 inch variable spead drill illiminating the need for a 1/4 HP motor motor mount and other I think unnecessary drive components. Once complete and used and of course successful. I will post for all to see. I am going to use stainless steel metal screws for the tumbling media as an experiment but if anyone (Karl or Greg) can get their hands on some new media for me that would be great. Yes of course if it works all my midwest buds within a few hours are welcome to use it. I know we have other threads about this I think but I believe the idea will panout. I have also looked at the old treadmill idea also and I think Karl ? made one like that. Any other ideas are welcome. I just want to do it for under 100 dollars. Not inclusive of the drill. :) Of course the easiest way would have been to keep the double tank tumbler I had ten years ago and not have to do this at all. Live and learn.

Hi Roger
I am sure you have plenty of ideas but you might find something useful in this post from one of the guys on the NC board. http://www.ncdivers.com/phpBB2/viewtopi ... ler#p98826

Hmmmm I have an excellent Dayton 1/4 hp 120v gear reduction tumbler motor that I would consider trading for a filter tower that I could use for my hyperfilter project :) :)

I might have a line on a tank tumbler that is for sale. He told me he has one in his loft and would possibly sell it to me. I should be able to get it cheap like other stuff I got from him. Will check with him on monday.

I built one last year with treadmill parts supplied by Karl. Here's some pic's.

I picked up some ceramic media from harbor freight and some other supplies from Northeast scuba supply.

TWO YEARS AGO I WAS PRODDED INTO BUILDING A TANK TUMBLER, ON THE CHEAP. TEN,
STEEL 72s THAT THE LDS HATED, THEY WERE A BUNCH OF TOOLS AS BRYAN WOULD SAY. I WASN'T
USING MY SKATE BOARD ANY LONGER, SINCE I LOST MY PAPER ROUTE, SO I RIPPED IT
DOWN FOR THE NEAT WHEELS. NEXT, I HIT THE BAY FOR A HIGH TORK A/C MOTOR ABOUT $39.00
DELIVERED. I HAD WOOD LAYING ABOUT TO BUTCHER AND I BOUGHT SOME BOLTS N NYLON
NUTS TO HOLD IT ALL TOGETHER. OUTLAY, ABOUT $120 BUCKS. SOME TUMBLER MEDIA FROM THE
ROCK SHOP. MY NEXT TRIP TO THE LDS, ALL THEY COULD SAY WAS "DAMN THOSE LOOK NEW"
AN SLAP A STICKER ON THEM. THEY HAD A SOURCE TO TUMBLE AT $45 PER TANK.....SO,
THE END RESORT IS I WON! DAMN, I STILL MISS THAT SKATE BOARD THOUGH!

I cut and pasted the link into the whatchacallit bar at the top of my browser and it worked just fine. Pretty fancy geared motor you have on that machine. What did you pirate it out of?

HI JIM,
I TRIED THE CUT N PASTE BIT, DID NOT WORK HERE IN TEXAS. ANYWHO, THE
MOTOR IS FROM E BAY. HIGH TORQUE WAS THE KEY WORD AND THERE WERE GOBS
OF THEM AVAILABLE. THE BLACK BOAT TRAILER ROLLER HAD TO BE KEYED TO
THE STEEL ROD AXEL TO KEEP THINGS ROLLING. I'M VERY PLEASED WITH IT.
LOVE TO TINKER.

Keep It Simple Stupid taken to extreems:

But I will note that 90% of what I see being tumbled could be done faster and cheeper with a whip.
