Label paint

Thu Jan 11, 2018 7:42 pm

I was wondering if anybody could recommend a shade of yellow paint to repaint a Mistral label with. After searching old post here, it seem most people buy a replacement label rather than repaint but there is nothing wrong with my original label that some chrome and paint won’t fix.

As one of the suppliers of reproduction regulator labels, I would rather see you get one from me, however, I did do some repainting a few years ago, before I made the repros. I used hobby paint made by the Testor Corporation. One is labeled Model Master Custom Spray Enamel: Bright Yellow #52921. The other is Colors by Boyd Enamel Paint: Sportster Yellow #52921. (Same number). Repainting is easy. Getting the paint off the raised stainless letters, etc. is NOT. I have carefully scraped, used the light, very, very fine sand paper and even the edge of a glass plate. My best advice is trial and error and a bit of luck. Good fortune. OR (humbly advised), get a repro.

Thank you for the information!!! I will be sure to look you up in the future for some new labels. This is my first go at getting a double hose cleaned up and back in the water so I figured I should try a repaint at least once. Thanks again!

I have a different method for painting labels.

Paint the label as normal, trying not to get the paint any deeper than necessary. Wrap a single edge razor blade with 1 layer of a coffee filter soaked in pain thinner. Scrap across the label with the blade in 1 stroke, reposition the coffee filter, make sure its still wet with thinner and make a second pass, I would go in the opposite direction. At this time you should have the vast majority of the paint off. Let it dry and any remaining residue of paint can be removed by repeating the process. This method will work with if the label has a fair amount of depth, very shallow labels, not so much but its worth a try, you can always remove the paint with the thinner if it does not suit you

Make sure the thinner will work on spray paint so test it before doing this.
