Russ,

Not a Trieste hater, but the diaphragm is poorly shaped for best performance. It is a dome, one of the structurally strongest shape. As such, it doesn't react to inhaling, lever activation as well as the diaphragm on most other double hose regulators. The overall design is fine, except for the diaphragm. We have taken the "guts" and installed them in USD cans or one of Rob's plastic ones and it works fine. Luis did this years ago with the Voit MR-12 first stage, same as the Trieste minus the second stage and called it the Pegasus.

I am glad yours is a fine breather. Most, in original configuration, are not.
Hey Alan.
What helps me with it ,is using a new silicon diapragm from Rob and a HPR 2nd stage.

An HPR type 2nd stage would really help the early horseshoe regulators to be much easier to breathe from.. unfortunately I don't think there is a large enough market to offset the R&D and production cost.

Nice collection, however, the Y-valve is not pre-1970 diving. You might want to move this to modern double hose diving.

I guess all those modern wetsuits, fins, and Krakens are ok, though.

OK, here are some pics, which are CAREFULLY chosen to not show any modern gear whatsoever, of some more of my vintage regs.

Phillip,

Love those Mistrals - have a few myself. I have a blue 50 Fathom like yours that I rebuilt and a 1961 chrome 50 Fathom that i just finished. Both are great breathers. Don't know a lot about Healthways but always willing to learn. I did rebuild a Gold Label a few months ago and that turned out fantastic. I think it breathes better than my Mistrals. You have a great looking collection!

As an aside, Fishnbeer Jerry invited me to attend a vintage gathering in Monterey in September. I see you are in Nor. Cal. I plan on attending that Saturday. Maybe get to meet you there and see some of your collection in person? Mark

I was there last year. Hope to see you next time! I will bring the whole reg collection, and some of the tanks, backpacks, etc. Maybe we'll get a dive in, together!

Picked up his and hers 1958 Mistrals at a garage sale for $25. The owner said he and his late wife bought them new together in 1959 in Redondo Beach, CA (he thinks it was Mel's Aqua Shop but wasn't sure it was called that then). Anyway, another cool find (just what I need, another 1958 Mistral).

Did a triple overnight dive expedition from the 20th thru the 24th this month, I got to try out my monster Nemrod "Max View" refurbished mask. Great visability with it, but it wants to push your mouth piece off to one side ore the other, it's that big. The equalizing exterior clips are a plus with this beast.

Did a vintage dive this morning using my RAM. I cheated a bit by adding a DSV since I was doing a beach dive and wanted to save as much air as possible for the actual dive.
