Voit 50 Fathom

Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:09 pm

If I am not mistaken, this is the downstream VCR-2 version of the 50 Fathom. Am I correct?

I just noticed that the hose clamps are Voit, too. Cool beans :)

After a little clean up.

Anyone got any hints on getting the sintered filter out to finish the cleaning? I've disassembled everything else, but there is enough crud around that filter ring to keep it sealed into the body. And I'm out of Salt-X.

Might try squirting some PB Blaster(penetrating oil) on it and leaving it sit over night. That might loosen 'er up.

Just for comparison, here are the three single stage bodies:

The left one is the up stream Voit, the top is the down stream Voit and the right is the USD Stream Air/Mistral up stream.

My Voit down Stream body is still in the parts box looking for a Voit Bottom/front can. If anyone has such a can that needs a good home please let me know.

Jim's right on the $$

Even after Salt-X some filters are still stuck like they are welded in place. Stand the 1st stage upright and put some penetrating oil all around the filter. It won't hurt any of the internals, most of which you will be replacing anyway. Be sure to put a shop towel over the filter when you are done.....I have seen filters loosen up and the spring tension shoots parts all over the garage. Some 50 Fathom's have a spring supporting the filter, some don't ....

Why not put it in one of Rob's cans until you find one?

I let it sit with PBlaster in it for weeks. No movement. I finally just drilled a hole in the filter and pulled it out with a pick. I think it was actually wedged in there, not just welded in with deposits.

Sure, an original will work, if I don't find one in my box o' parts. I think the Conshelf ones fit, too. I need to make an order for some rebuild kits anyway.
I can't bitch too much. I lucked out and only dropped $20 for this Voit.

Finally got the body rechromed(big shout out to Dave Ali), and the parts kit from Bryan. Put it in one of Rob's blue cans. A little light sanding on the seat, and it goes together without a leak. I'm adjusting the lever height, and reach for the new diaphragm....which I forgot to order. Doh! Time to make another order...

I'll post some pics later. But right now, it looks like the 50 Fathom salvage worked fine.
