"Science of Skin and SCUBA" diving series

Tue Jul 30, 2013 2:09 pm

Unquestionably one of the better dive training manuals was the "Science of Skin and SCUBA" diving series. Over the years I managed to acquire all editions, hard cover and paper back.

A copulation of all editions is as follows:

re The Science of Skin and SCUBA diving

1957- LCCC # 57-11601- (hard cover)=306 total pages
1959- revised edition LCCC # 57-11601-(hard cover)=306 total pages
```````````````````
Title changed to;
The NEW Science of Skin and SCUBA diving
1962-LCCC # 62-9376=208 (hard cover) total pages
1962-LCCC # 62-9376=208 (paperback) total pages
1967-LCCC # 67-14583=224 total pages
1968-ISBN # 0-8096-1548-3 (hard cover) = 224 total pages
1968-ISBN # 0-8096-0453-1 (paper back) = 224 total pages
1974- ISBN # 0-8096-1876-1 2 (hard cover)=87 total pages
1974- ISBN # 0-8096-0472-8 (paper back)=287 total pages
1980-ISBN # 0-695-81424-9 (hard cover) = 301 total pages
1980-ISBN # 0-695-81346-3 (paper back) = 301 total pages
It would be advisable for all entering the world of vintage diving to acquire a copy of the pre 1974 editions which concentrates on double hose diving. They are relatively inexpensive and can be found listed on E bay, and half.com.
"The Science of Skin and SCUBA diving," the first two editions,1957 & 1958 are becoming very rare and if located should be purchased immediately.
Just my opinion, but Copulation is generally more fun than reading dive manuals. :shock:
I do appreciate the information on the different editions... thanks.
The older I get the better I was.
I was lucky enough to find this (1957) one. It was originally purchased by Joy Smith of Depoe Bay, Oregon for $3.95:
Dale,
What can I say?
You are with out question the A number one diving bibliophile of God's Frozen People!
The first two edition of the Science of "Skin and SCUBA Diving" are EXTREMELY rare! Next to impossible to find. They should be elevated to the position of rare collectable book
I was fortunate that I acquired my copies many years ago, right after the "New Science od Skin and SCUBA" was issued. Even then the first edition was rare.
Some years ago a friend of mine who was a student at the very first NAUI course in August 1960 was very ill and presented me with his copy before he passed away. He had the for thought to have all the students and instructors of that course personally inscribe and autograph the copy. Certainly one of a kind.
Keep up the good work-- as you realize the vintage dive books are the fountain head of recreational diving.
SDM,
Undoubtably the BEST training manuals for the recreational diver. I have also acquired all six editions (only have the first edition in hard cover) and I still refer to them on occasion (I learned on the 4th edition).
A huge congratulations!
The first and second editions were only printed in hard back with a dust cover.
I just picked up a 59 editon for $7.00 and a 70's era New Science workbook for $3.00. Hopefully the condition is as good as they described them.
I figure the workbook will make a great resource for a new VDH forum quiz this winter when most of you are indoors ;)
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB
I just completed a survey of The New Science series on the used book market
448 copies of The NEW Science of Skin and SCUBA
1 copy of The Science of Skin and SCUBA- 1959 edition, with DJ about $5.00 US
As previously stated original copies of The Science of Skin and SCUBA are becoming very rare but so far not demanding classic book prices.
