Double Hose in Florida Springs??

Thu Mar 15, 2018 4:50 pm

I am traveling to Florida this fall with my family and was wondering if anyone knows if I will get hassled or refused using my Kraken, secondary, and wing if I want to dive any of the springs. I’ve been in the Rainbow River and they could care less. Was going to try Catfish Hotel, Manatee Springs, Ginnie Springs, etc. Anyone been rejected by the management at any of these places?

I went to “Devils Den” last fall and asked them about diving a double hose reg and was looked at like I was from Mars! Didn’t even appear to know what I was talking about. Then when I explained it, began getting the look of “that’s a liability” followed with uneasy questions concerns about a bcd/wing, safe secondary, spg, and if my equipment had been serviced recently! I’m sure at that point they would’ve flipped if I told them I service my own. Just don’t want to fly to FL with my DH and then be turned down by those that see us as a liability.

Most of us have learned to never ask for permission. Just set-up your gear like you know what you are doing. They may ask questions, but give answers to those questions only. Don't be braggadocios nor self-conscious. Just go dive. Never a problem anywhere I have been.
I am sure most of the places you are planning to go to have seen DH regulators before and recently.

Agree with Allan!

You'll have a lot more fun in life and many more experiences if you follow the advice of the late Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper: "It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission."

This is very good advice.

When you ask for permission, you are right up front opening the door for them to say NO. One way to look at it: Why would they even consider saying yes to something they don’t know anything about, when you already gave them the option to just say no.

The VDH Argonaut Kraken is just another modern regulator of a different brand name.

The way I see it, I would not ask for permission to dive a Kraken, any more than I would ask for permission to dive a side breathing regulator like a Poseidon Cyklon or a Jetstream. They are all different and the shop may not be familiar with any of them, but that would be my choice, not the dive operator.

Yeah I've been all through those springs and nobody has ever said anything to me. The only time people have ever turned me away is on a couple of dive boats. Some dive boat operators will complain about not having any bouyancy control device. Even having said that, I've dived a double hose, a cotton harness, no BC, and no SPG on numerous boats, including with many of the people here. I'd say maybe 3 times dive boat operators have bitched about not having a BC or safety sausage, or not allowed me back afterwards. That's about it. In all of those situations though I was diving truly vintage with no octo, no low pressure inflator, no BC, no safety sausage, an oval mask, etc.

Typically, if people are smart they will let you dive. Dive shops and charter boats are not a winning business model. They need every dollar.

I always follow the mantra that it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission. Check in, suit up, go diving, act like everyone else and you should be fine......Other than answering questions from curious divers or ones admiring your gear. .......Vintage Double Hose.com is often a good answer in response to questions 8)
Doing it right should include some common sense, not just blindly following specs and instructions. .Gary D, AWAP on SB
