Remember the beer question?

Sun Aug 29, 2010 10:07 pm

Anyone who was at Legends of Divng 2010 remembers that I posed the question of how one would consume beer underwater. Well, today at Ginnie I did just that. The specific gravity of beer is about that of water, so it just stayed in the can after I opened it and equalized the pressure. I chugged it at 50 feet, and then finished the dive. It kind of feels like being narced, except you are only at 50 feet. Interestingly, as I am not aware of the internal pressure of an unopened beer, the volume appeared unchanged at 50 feet so the internal pressure in the can must be higher than the ambient water pressure around it. I moved the open beer into various positions, and no beer came out until I drank it. Needless to say there were some very surprised open water divers at Ginnie today. One lady asked if she could have my car because she thought I would die somehow toting a beer and 50 year old dive gear down to the water.

The best part was that is was some redneck Floridian who tossed me a Busch Light in order to facilitate my endeavor. Stand back....I'm going to try SCIENCE!

I think that was part of the AOW class in the 70's & 80's when PADI was a non-profit organization.

Sounds fun. Have you considered what might happen with the CO2 expanding as you ascend? The most rapid change in pressure occurs ascending from 33 ft. Beer bubbles in the stomach should clear with belching, but beer in the intestine could be something else. Perhaps leaving your keys and your watch with someone on the surface is good idea. Steve

How, exactly, would one get beer in one's intestines within 5 minutes of drinking it?

So at 50 ft. was the beer flat or was the carbonation about what you expected?

George,

It tasted a lot like a cask conditioned beer. It had good flavor, but it was pretty flat. I did expel quite a bit of gas on the ascent

Personally I was thinking of a slurp gun used in reverse  It would give it new meaning.

I would be willing to bet that it was actually the six-pack you polished off about 2-2 1/2 hours prior to your "experiment".

I was actually remarkably sane about this one. I didn't drink anything other than water. This helped me better catalog the effects of the deep..and the beer.
