The Rescue

Sat Dec 04, 2021 2:31 pm

In addition to the Cousteau documentary on National Geographic (Disney +) there is an outstanding documentary entitled The Rescue. It is about the successful rescue of the boys trapped in the cave in Thailand a few years ago. The courage shown by all especially by the skilled cave divers and Thai SEALs is remarkable. Even though we know the outcome many of the scenes have you at the edge of your seat. Highly recommended and it just reinforces for me that cave diving is damn scary. https://youtu.be/_-Kw5kAPSbk

I'm fairly certain the actual planning and rescue was in command by the PJs but you don't hear much about them (and they like it that way) they let the locals take the credit as is custom in country. Not to take anything away from the Thais, just that there were many people involved with the rescue, an estimated 10,000 people with more than 100 divers. From the USAF: team from the 320th Special Tactics Squadron, the 31st Rescue Squadron, and the 353rd Special Operations Group joined them,

At the request of the Royal Thai government, the U.S., through U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, sent a search and rescue team from Okinawa, Japan to assist Thai rescue authorities in locating the team. Approximately 40 U.S. military personnel from U.S. Indo-Pacific Command including pararescuemen, a survival specialist and support personnel to include medical, communications and logistics, and U.S. Embassy Bangkok were brought on-site to assist with the rescue efforts.

It truly was an international effort. It was pointed out that the Thailand SEALs were brave but not equipped or had the expertise in cave diving. I was just amazed that given the conditions that anyone was able to pull this off.

Forgot to mention when talking about the Thai Seals (lower case as in the marine animal, not SEa Air Land) their primary missions are maritime interdiction and law enforcement. Unlike "The TEAMS" where it's Anywhere, Anytime.
The Underwater Demolition Assault Unit (UDAU)[1] of the Royal Thai Navy (Thai language: หน่วยทำลายใต้น้ำจู่โจม) is a 144-man special operations force within the Military of Thailand. The unit is colloquially also known as the Royal Thai Navy SEALs (Thai: หน่วยซีล), the Thai language word for Seals[2] as in the pinniped animals. Although this title was influenced by the US unit, it is not an acronym like the American unit's.
