Clear Coat on chrome?

Thu Feb 20, 2020 10:32 am

I got the "WORST" problem!
I got a Royal Mistral that don't have a scratch on it.
That means I don't want to dive it because, I know I'm a klutz.
Can Aerosol Clear Coat prevent me from scratching it up?

Hi Seakrakken!
I am distressed about the possibility of your scratching up your perfect RM. I have the perfect solution to your dilemma (used to be spelled "dilemna"). You can probably guess what I have in mind, so I won't bother you with the details.

Basically I just wanted to say hello, and I should also thank you again, and note to other forum readers, about your identifying my SPACO as a very special item when you saw it in 2006! :D

 Hi Bill!
I'm so glad to hear from you!
I remember that day in your shop when you showed me that SPACO.
I was Gob Smacked!
I had literally never seen one in person until that day.
As for you eloquent solution to my Dilemma...'nough said!

I wouldn't coat it, the coating is going to get scratched and look worse than the chrome. If anything, I would dig up an old Mistral, put the guts in it and dive that , saving the cans. Now, the real question is the reg divable? From what I have heard, those regs are rarely in diving condition.

I have yet to put it on a tank but, I can rebuild it easy enough.
I can't post any pics but, imagine you just pulled it out of the original box when it was brand new.
I bought it at auction on the 'bay from Germany.
He mentioned it was from his personal collection.
I think he meant his Art collection.

Guess I should ask WHICH Royal Mistral?
The La Spiro one, yea you can rebuild it easily, the USD one is a whole different matter. Very few of them (USD) exist and the ones that do rarely are divable.

Tell you what. Send it to me and I'll dive it and put a few scratches in it. Then you won't feel bad about diving it! Problem solved. And I'll even dive it in fresh water! :D :D

Hey Bill,

Am I mistaken or did you used to run a company that handled compressors?

My small company, PSI TEXAS, does contract consulting and field service for August Industries, a major Bauer distributor in Carrollton, TX.
Let me know if there's something I can help you with. You can use my email link, or if it's of possible interest to other vintage divers post on VDH forum.

Spraymax 2K clear is great stuff. A two part aerosol loaded clearcoat. It is tough and dries hard and fast. However, I would refrain from using it on a regulator.

I cleared my chrome Bianchi SS bicycle with the 2K clear, I also used it on my Triumph 675R fairing. But it will inevitably get scratched, seawater will work under it and it will peel and look gross.
